Tyche
Chance, fortune, contingency
The fox’s cute clothes and red eyeliner make her appear playful, while her smiling mouth conceals sharp teeth. In Ancient Greece, Tyche was the goddess of chance, fortune, or contingency. She spins a card, playing with your fate in the most casual way imaginable.
Many fear Tyche. For others, knowing that things can change is their sanctuary. Tyche’s saucer and cup sit together like striving and acceptance, always co-arising in conflict or in balance. But one thing is for certain, Tyche is not under our employ. Her most essential quality is not mercy.
Still, this unpredictable fox is not heartless. In her teacup, Tyche brews the perfect concoction for living with chance. It’s a recipe that has been handed down to her through more generations than can be traced. It must be your good fortune that today she shares it with you. It’s a simple formula of equal parts longing, imagination, and acquiescence.
Finding quiescence, or calm, in the face of change is not easy, and can be counterintuitive. But even when Tyche’s whims are unwelcome, stilling one’s inner turmoil is a victory. Tyche contends that a sip of her savory potion can satisfy a person even when their wishes go unanswered. When mixed with the nutritive herb of acquiescence in oneself, imagining and longing for what is desired becomes a vitalizing heart tonic.
