Walrus

The walrus lounges with ease, soaking in the rays of an unusually orange sky, as waves gently lap against their flippers. The sky seems to be achieving its particular glow with the help of airborne particles emitted from a smoke stack out at sea. The churning waves are strewn with red streaks. It appears to be an ocean in distress with an algae epidemic, or worse. Amidst the apocalyptic glow of industrial progress, the walrus has the cheerful contentment of one who has made peace with themself, and can enjoy the unseasonably warm air—saturating in the full complexity of the elemental dance of the Anthropocene, as kids play and jellyfish wiggle in the waves. 

It’s hard to put your finger on the walrus’ role in this scene. Their hat and robe say Winston Churchill meets Jamgon Kongtrul. There is an honesty within the absurdity, the way that it reflects living in the disorienting current state of human affairs. Who is polluting whose ecosystem, and for what? The walrus’ floating teacup may be a relic bearing dakini script, or a mass-produced mug used for product placement. Whatever is occurring, the walrus meets it with cheerful equanimity, which some may perceive as teetering a hair’s breadth from dissociation. The walrus has enough room for both.
